Wednesday morning we took a wild ride (which every ride in the city to some extent is) to the city museum of history.  It is probably hard to tell from the view out of the windshield, but we are driving down the sidewalk to try to get a good parking spot!  The museum is a real tourist attraction drawing people from all over the country.  People stand in line for hours to get in.  We somehow scored some special tickets and walked right in.  Where else can you see an actual corpse of a woman who died 2100 years ago with 138 1/2 muskmelon seeds still in her stomach?  You can see how impressed our daughter is with Chinese history!  American children be thankful you live in a country that only has a couple hundred years worth of history.  These people have to learn thousands of years worth of historical facts!  Annabelle takes a family photo album with her almost everywhere she goes.  Sometimes she even lets other people look at it!  We were given a real treasure from the orphanage that our guide is working on translating.  It is a scrapbook type album of Ming Mei's development complete with photographs from her years there.  She was a student in the Little Sisters program of Half the Sky Organization.  They provide this "baby book" for their students, most of whom will never find families, realizing  how important it will be for them as they mature.  We know it will be very special for Annabelle when she is older and full of questions about her past.

Her routine involves starting and ending the day with a warm cup of formula per orphanage instructions.  It's sort of like having a cup of coffee I guess.  Especially when you serve it in a coffee mug!  Someone asked how tall Annabelle is so here is a perspective shot with Dad.  Let's just say tall doesn't come up often when describing her!  The top photo shows her typical breakfast.  Yes, Luke those are potstickers and she does love them!  The next photo is the famous congee.  It is a rice based cereal similar to cream of wheat.  It is available at every meal and she always polishes off a bowl or two.  Perhaps she can transition to grits easily enough.
At dinner on Tuesday Annabelle discovered chocolate ice cream!  How many three year olds do you know that can pull off devouring that dessert in a white dress and not spill a drop??

Annabelle Mingmei Thompson

It  is official. There is a new Thompson child and her name is Annabelle Mingmei. All the paper work was completed this morning and now we wait for her passport to be done and we will move on to Guangzhou to complete the visa stuff with the US Consulate.  She shed a few tears as the orphanage staff told her goodbye.  It was very sad quiet sobbing that led to falling asleep in the van on the way to the hotel.  She woke up fine and ready to play.   The game of the day is trying to get the remote control and buy some pay per view!  Next favorite is trying to gain control of the computer.  She is having to settle for coloring and styling her hair. That hair part is not so easy.  There is just not a lot to work with!

She slept great last night once she realized that we were all going to bed.  About three a.m. she asked to be taken to the bathroom and then she went right back to sleep.  We had to wake her up to eat breakfast before we went to the civil offices.  You must realize that you need plenty of time to eat.  She takes it very seriously!  Not a grain of rice goes to waste.  She has excellent table manners and is quite tidy.  After the large plate of dumplings, fruit, pancakes, pumpkin cakes, and rice and a couple bowls of congee she is ready for her day.  She must have an incredible metabolism!

Annabelle Mingmei likes to keep things organized.  She lines her toys up and puts everything where it belongs before she moves on.  She takes many breaks to go check herself out in the full length mirror, look at her bracelet, and redo her barrette and then pretend to hide before coming running back laughing.

Fun Time With My New Phone

Just a few more pictures before bedtime. Ming Mei is doing well.

Who Loves Mister Potato Head?

Making faces on carrots is fun but dressing up a potato is even more fun. The giggles came out after nap time. We thought you would like to see...

More Photos

We had a nap and a banana snack. Now it is time to play Mr. Potato Head.

A Few More Photos

A few more pictures of the Whacko Mall and the girls having tasty beverages.

Day One with Annabelle Mingmei

We finally meet little Mei Mei and she is adorable. She is very sweet and very good at staring. Grace may have met her match in the Staring Contest. She loves the photo album we sent her and she seemed to know us from our photo. She held tightly to the photo album at the government offices and at the supermarket (the Whacko Mall) and only put it down in the hotel to play with her new phone (toy). She is small (more like a 2 year old) but not really skinny. The orphanage director says she is a favorite of the orphanage caretakers and, as a result, is pretty much spoiled rotten. They brought her in a lovely yellow princess dress. Susan thought it might be an outfit for a dance recital but so far no ballet moves have been performed (okay I can't spell pirouettte). She looks a bit tired from her big day so maybe we will have some lunch and then a nap. More later...

Changsha, Hunan

We left Guangzhou this morning but not before taking a few more photos of the airport from our room and the amazing bathroom retractible shade device.

We arrived in Changsha this morning on China Southern Airlines. The airport had just opened but the crowds were amazing. I can see now why they tell spoiled Richmonders to arrive two hours early for a domestic flight. Long lines to check in and longer lines for security. Susan had some of her hair products confiscated and was not happy. At least they didn't try to have her fingerprinted. Ha Ha.

We are settling in here today but will meet Vicki (our guide and interpreter) tomorrow morning and go to the civil authorities building where we will meet Annabelle. Stay tuned.

We are in China

Just dropping a quick note to let you all know we have made it to Guangzhou and will depart tomorrow for Changsha. We are staying at the airport hotel, very nice, with broadband internet, stocked refrigerator, and scenic views of both the airport and our own bathroom! See photos.
